Ellesmere Picnic 2011

Following on from the success of the past two years picnics this years late summer brunch did not disappoint. The energy and good spirit of the Ellesmere Avenue and adjoining avenues community is alive and well.

Everyone appeared to enjoy the opportunity to join each other at the community dining table. This years menu was comprised of bar-b-q roast porchetta, champ, rosemary potatoes and a myriad of salads followed by homemade crumble apple pies and cupcakes. All these were accompanied by fresh lemonade ,minerals and various alcoholic beverages. A veritable feast that would have made even Hugh Fearnely Whittingstal proud.

People chewed and chatted for hours . While old friends from the avenue shared stories of the past recent baby arrivals to the avenues were introduced to each other and will hopefully share similar fond memories in the future.

The children played skittles, giant jenga, exercised their football skills painted a mural and bounced till their earlier picnic nearly reemerged.

As twilight approached the 70s 80s 90s and noughties tunes that had provided the soundtrack to the day soon changed to the lounge tunes of Louis prima and later to the mellow jazz tones of Dexter Gordon and Robbie Coltrane. The children retired and everyone relaxed sipping last years sloe gin which was compared to the 2009 vintage.

For a short time silence took over as a nomadic poet mr Barnes brought a reflective tone to the evening as he recited 2 of his poems. Revellers mulled over his words and washed them down with the last of the summer wine and at 10.45 lugnasa came to a close.

Until next year
